Te Rua o te Rata by Aka Whiro: a long rata trumpet, bound with muka and inlaid with pāua.

Taonga pūoro · 2025

Te Rua o te Rata

A pūkaea, the second chamber of the rata

One breath, and the old tree speaks.

The kōrero

A pūkaea is a voice. This one is carved from rata, a timber so dense and unforgiving that few shape its inner chamber without breaking it. The muka binds the body. The pāua is the eye of sight and direction. Blow through it and the breath that comes out is not only yours. It carries the old tides, the hands that bound it, and the echo of those yet to arrive. When you breathe into it, you breathe with them.
