Pou Marama: a row of tall engraved acrylic pou, lit from the side in red and blue so the engraved designs glow, reflected in a dark floor.

Commissions

Something made for a place, a person or a people.

A commission starts with a kōrero about what the piece is for and where it will stand. You see it as it moves, and it comes to you with its record.

How it runs

  1. It begins with a kōrero.

What the piece is for, where it will stand, who it will stand for. The rākau, the size, the time and the cost are named before anything is agreed.

  2. You see it as it moves.

At the named points along the way you see the work in progress. It does not move on until it is right.

  3. It comes with its record.

The piece and its record travel together: the rākau and where it came from, the kōrero, and the honest notes made along the way. The record stays whole.

Named before the work starts

Before anything is cut, you will know:

  • what the timber is, and where it came from
  • what the piece can do, and what it cannot
  • the time it will take, and what can change that
  • whether it can travel

Some materials need permits to leave Aotearoa, and some cannot leave at all. If a piece is going overseas, that is worked out at the start, never discovered later.

Starting one

A commission starts with an email. Tell me what the piece is for and where it will stand, and we will go from there.
